But keep one thing in mind that you may have to make some hard choices about which plants you keep alive and which you discard for time being until the season lasts.
To fight against these dry conditions, here are few things which you can keep in mind to keep your garden and plants alive.
1. Watering: Watering is the most crucial step. If you water your garden and plants at regular intervals they will grow rich and won’t dry up. Using a watering system can prove in better results. In dry seasons try to supply water directly to the roots of the plants. Try watering your garden in the evening rather than in the morning as there is more time for the water to penetrate into the soil before the evaporation process begins as the sun comes up. Also try to make holes or dig the hard dry areas of land before watering; this helps in better penetration of water into the soil. Try creating little grades around the base of your trees or plants, so that water stays for a longer time and the plant has less chances of drying up. One important point to take into consideration is don’t water your grass now and then, only water when needed.
2. Mulch: It is the best method of water preservation and temperature regulation in the soil. Installing mulch in your garden is of utmost importance as it acts as a barrier between the sun heat and the soil, this reduces evaporation and loss of moisture from the soil. It keeps the roots of the plants and soil cooler. Try keeping your mulch filled up every 6-12 months, depending on the type of mulch used. It helps in reducing weed growth. If the mulch is organic it feeds your soil.
3. Soil quality: It is important that you make sure your garden soil is full of organic substances which helps the soil to hold water for a longer period of time and more efficiently. If the soil is of poor or depleted quality it will not hold water efficiently and will lead to dry or dead plants. So, soil quality plays a major role in plant growth. If your soil contains enough proportion of organic matter it will help in proper regulation of water.
4. Proper Irrigation System: If you irrigate your plants and garden properly you’ll never face the problem of drying up of plants or dead gardens. Installing appropriate irrigation systems for your gardens can help sustain your garden from the drought conditions and makes your garden look beautiful all time. Drip irrigation is considered to be the most effective method of irrigating plants. The most significant part of drip irrigation is it uses the least amount of water and don’t let your plants dry up. Once you install this system with a timer you need not worry about watering your plants time to time. Sprinkler irrigation system is a better option for irrigation your lawns or gardens.
5. Wetting agents: Making use of wetting agents for your soil can help retain water for a longer time and thus drying up of plants can be eliminated. There are various types of wetting agents available in the market in powdered form, liquid form, granular form, etc. Hydrocell is one such material when mixed with soil can absorb 60% of its own volume in water and thereby holding water for longer period of time.
